SDRAM Computer Memory Upgrade Chips
When total your computer's electronic memory and its available hard drive space falls below 60 percent, you'll begin to see "error messages" on your screen.On older computers, you might receive a message that says : "This program has performed an illegal operation and will close." Doubling your memory space will reduce the number of these messages significantly.
Another form of memory may be hiding in your system. There's memory on the graphics controller. Its main function is to provide higher colour values as you increase output resolution. For example, it takes only 1 MB of graphics memory to produce 24-bit colour (16.7 million shades) at 640 by 480 (640 horizontal picture elements or pixels -- the smallest unit on your screen that the computer can change -- by 480 lines of them). To get that many colours at 800 by 600, you'll need 2 MB of graphics memory and 4 MB to get it at 1024 by 768.
The only time you care about how much ROM a device has is when buying one of the new Palm PCs, a handheld PC (H/PC) or organizer such as the Palm II or Psion. Both the operating system for these small devices, as well as applications for them, are stored in ROM and here, the amount does make a difference.
DRAM -- (dynamic random access memory) makes up the the main system memory on most older (486 and early Pentium) computers. Also known as FPM (fast page mode) DRAM, it comes in 80, 70 or 60 nanosecond (ns) speeds (the lower the number, the faster the memory).
Always purchase a computer system that can be upgraded later on. At times, it makes more sense to buy a middle-of-the-road computer and upgrading memory as needed than to buy a super-expensive state-of-the-art model. Economically, you'll be doing better by purchasing a medium-priced one and upgrading as needed.
According to Family PC Magazine, upgrading your RAM will give your computer a bigger boost than upgrading the computer's processor or installing a new hard drive. With Windows 2000, you can gain as much as 115% with a memory upgrade.
Your computer system can detect when you have added memory and automatically begins using it.
